What the HILL? I am watching Ben Hur for the first time and they have the intermission sign up on the screen?

Was this so people could go smoke? Eat? This was before drive-by shootings so they could go outside. How long were the movies back then to merit a break to go outside? Did they not hurry for popcorn, cokes and nachos like we do today?
